Communication in relationships

What if the problem isn't that you don't communicate—but that the conversation keeps following the same script?

Couples can talk constantly and still feel profoundly unheard. Therapy can help make the interactional pattern visible enough to change.

Schedule an Intro Discussion

Communication problems are often interaction problems.

One partner pushes harder because they do not feel heard. The other withdraws because the conversation feels overwhelming. Withdrawal increases the first partner's urgency; urgency increases the second partner's withdrawal. Before long, both people are responding to the cycle as much as to the original issue.

If every difficult conversation ends in the same place, the content may change while the pattern stays remarkably consistent.

Better communication is more than “using the right words.”

Timing

Can important conversations happen when both partners have enough capacity to participate?

Listening

Can each person understand what the other means before preparing the rebuttal?

Repair

What happens after a conversation goes badly? Can either partner interrupt escalation and help the relationship recover?

Meaning

What does the disagreement represent underneath the surface—respect, safety, autonomy, belonging, fairness, or being valued?

You don't have to have the whole answer before you begin.

Sometimes therapy begins by understanding the question more clearly.
